Do I need WordPress or can I use a website builder?

WordPress gives you control and lower long-term costs; builders are simpler. Here is how to choose.

WordPress and website builders both build websites, but they are different products. WordPress.org is open-source software you install on your own hosting. You own everything, you control the code, and your only recurring costs are hosting and a domain. The trade-off is that you are responsible for updates, backups and security.

Squarespace, Wix and similar builders bundle design, hosting and maintenance into one subscription. You do not touch code or worry about updates, but you pay a monthly fee forever, and moving to another platform later means rebuilding the site. Shopify plays a similar role specifically for online stores: fast to start, but transaction fees and subscription costs add up over time.

For a small business, the honest recommendation depends on your goals. Choose WordPress if you want long-term control, lower running costs, full ownership of your content and the ability to grow into e-commerce or custom features. Choose a builder like Squarespace if you want the simplest possible setup, no technical maintenance and a fixed monthly cost. Choose Shopify if selling online is your primary focus and you want payments and shipping handled out of the box.

You can always start on a builder to validate an idea and move to WordPress later. The one thing to avoid is deciding based on the website alone: think about what your business will need in three years, not just this quarter.
